Have a question?
What types of questions are on the citizenship test?
The US citizenship test includes 100 civics questions. Generally, applicants will be asked up to 10 questions from a list of 100 civics questions. In order to successfully pass the exam it will be necessary to answer at least six of ten random questions correctly. The English language portion of the test has three parts: reading, writing, and speaking. An individual's ability to speak basic English will be determined by the USCIS officer conducting the interview. Applicants will be required to read aloud one of three sentences correctly for the reading portion of the exam. Applicants will be required to write one out of three sentences correctly as well.
I failed a portion of the naturalization test. What should I do?
Unless you are eligible for an exception to the English or civics requirements, you will be given two opportunities to meet the English and civics requirements. If you fail any portion of these requirements, you will be retested during a new interview on the portion of the test that you failed (English or civics) between 60 and 90 days from the date of your initial interview.
I was charged with a crime. What should I do?
If you have ever been charged with a criminal offense, even if it was dismissed, do not use this application. You should contact an attorney for personalized representation.
I was charged with a crime after my naturalization application and before my oath ceremony. What should I do?
This is a serious matter. Speak to an attorney immediately.
I have been outside the United States for more than 1 year. Can I apply?
Contact a local attorney. Do not use this application.
How soon can I apply for naturalization after receiving my green card?
If you received your green card from marriage to a US citizen and you have been residing with them continuously for the past 3 years, you can apply 2 years and 10 months after your received your green card. If you did not receive your green card this way, you can apply 4 years and 10 months after you became a permanent resident. This includes these categories: getting your permanent residence through a parent sponsor, through asylum and through an employer.
If I was granted asylum, when can I apply for Citizenship?
You must have been a permanent resident for 5 years, but you can count 1 year of your time as an asylee towards the 5 year requirement. If you are using this 1 year calculation method, know that USCIS has actually already calculated this 1 bonus year for you, and listed your date of permanent residence on your green card as 1 year before you received your green card.
I am currently married to a U.S. citizen. Can I apply at 2 years and 10 months if we are not living together?
No, you need to be living with the US citizen to apply at 2 years and 10 months.
Can I travel outside the U.S. while my citizenship application is pending?
Yes.
I am a minor and my parent (s) became a citizen recently. Do I need to use the N-400 form?
No, you received citizenship derivatively from your parent. You would use N-600 to prove your citizenship.
My family members received their permanent residence at the same time as me. Can we all file for naturalization jointly, using one application?
Anyone 18 years or older must file a separate application.
I submitted my application but I have more questions about my citizenship application or interview. Will there be a separate fee?

When should I purchase an optional legal consultation?
For most Citizenship Selfie users, the answer is never. Our extraordinary features eliminate the need to speak directly to an attorney. However, optional legal consultations may be useful to users who have questions about an area of immigration law beyond citizenship, as well as users who have completed the naturalization process and now wish to file visa petitions for their relatives. Finally, Citizenship Selfie users who have filed their applications after review by an attorney, but then experience an unexpected change in their eligibility for citizenship, or other unexpected complication or delay in USCIS's processing of their application, may benefit from a phone consultation with an attorney.
